In the middle of summer season we wanted to combine  camping with standup paddling. As we’ve never been to south eastern part of Slovenia with our boards, this was quite an obvious decision.

To experience the river Kolpa’s homeground on paddle boards, along with some amazing natural sights off site, we decided to have a little sleepover at Domačija Kuzma campsite.

First impressions: 

Very domestic, uncomplicated. Might be a lovely stay.

How our stay actually went:

We’ve only spent there one night. Arriving to the destination late in the morning, we were welcomed by a family member that owns the campsite, shown a parking space and given brief instructions about the pitch.  We can say the welcome was a little loose for a first time-visit, but we got round quickly. We drove all the way to the end-corner of the campsite that is placed just feet away form the Kolpa river, which is well-known summer swimming getaway. Passing a middle sized field where you can find unmarked pitches for tents, vans and RVs we arrived to a little corner, where it’s a tent only space. Quiet, very private, we only had two neighbours with small tents that were totally undisturbing. Just above the water, we pitched the tent, inflated our boards and went stand up paddling on the river Kolpa.

As we were staying there for one night only, we didn’t cook our meals, just our coffee and cacao at night. We treated ourselves a pizza in the bar on-site. The staff was really nice, pizza was great and the place was packed with people. We also didn’t put much attention to the sanitation facilities, we only used them once or twice and it seemed clean. 

The night there was quite cold, but peaceful. As this was one of the early camping experiences, we had just a borrowed tent with sleeping mats, tiny pillows and two blankets. No electricity, just pocket light. Quite romantic 😉 People didn’t have any loud parties and also if they did, the tent pitches are really private. Did I mention we also had a night swim in the river and that was an experience itself. If you try it, we advise you have a little torch with you and no jumping in the water because of the rocks inside. Make sure you are also prepared for some big fish swimming in there 🙂

Overall experience:

Honestly, it was okay but we were not very impressed. Maybe our stay was too short. However, we liked the peacefulness and privacy a lot. Maybe we’d like some more directions from the staff as it was our first visit. If you like riversides it might be a nice place for you too.
