In present-day South America (particularly Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, and southern Brazil), yerba mate continues to be a widely consumed staple and is a celebrated part of everyday culture.
Mate is commonly prepared as hot beverage in a hollow gourd (mate) and drank with a metallic straw (bombilla). When prepared with cold water (or lemonade) it is called terere.
The tea has a bitter, yet refreshing flavor and is a well-balanced stimulant that provides energy and nutrition. The caffeine content of yerba mate varies between that of green tea and coffee. Caffeine in yerba has a gradual effect.
Make sure you have your yerba tea in a traditional way to get all the benefits from it : ita may result as increased alertness, enhanced physical performance, antimicrobial properties, supporting weight loss, lowering blood sugar, reducing cholesterol levels, risk of heart disease and chronic inflammation.
