The biggest of the 17
Perfect for those who want to connect with nature away from the crowds
dry or wet - beautiful tranquility
Vast meadows turning into lake
Palško Jezero is the largest of the 17 intermittent karst lakes in the Pivka region, located within a unique landscape shaped by karst phenomena. It’s a fascinating site that, like its counterparts, fills with water during wetter months (typically from autumn to spring) and then dries out, revealing vast, open spaces. These lakes are rare in Europe and are a significant part of the Pivka Karst Landscape Park, offering habitat for a range of plant and animal species.
During our visit, the lake was dry, yet the experience was anything but lacking. The landscape, bathed in sunlight on that warm, still December day, provided a serene and almost mystical atmosphere. We parked a little away from the lake and walked through a quiet forest, which added to the sense of seclusion. Despite the lack of water, the area’s tranquility and the surrounding nature were captivating.
The terrain around Palško Jezero is marked by wide, expansive meadows and patches of wetland, all framed by soft rolling hills. The lake’s natural contours are best appreciated from above, which we did with the help of a drone, offering breathtaking views of the dry lake bed and the surrounding landscape. What stood out was not just the beauty, but the quiet resilience of this environment. Even without its water, the landscape seemed to breathe, revealing the full majesty of a place defined by change, yet always standing still in its beauty.
It’s a location that invites reflection and quiet exploration, perfect for those who want to connect with nature away from the crowds. The area’s pristine nature, combined with its geological and ecological significance, make it a must-see for anyone interested in the rare, fleeting beauty of intermittent lakes.
