As the weather is getting warmer in the beginning of April,  we’ve decided to take advantage of an event, organized by the Union of Planina cave and spend a little time in the cooler and more humid environment of the underground world.  The Planina cave was open for public and included a short, approximately 500m long walk on a guarded path at the beginning of the cave.

The path leading to the entrance of the cave is  a wooden construction next to the river Unica that comes out of the cave as a product of confluence of two other streams in the region – Pivka and Rak. The entrance itself offers a  glorious sight, let alone the cave, that is home to many animal species, including bugs, fish and yes, the human fish, too.

The Planina cave is the most active water in Slovenia,  full of beautiful halls and lakes. This creation of nature can be visited guided or unguided, they offer short and longer organized tours that also include exploring the cave by boat. Necessary equipment is a torch so that you can actually see the beautiful cave carvings, appropriate hiking shoes and clothes (mind that you’ll be walking in a cave – the ground will be a little muddy, with puddles, possibly a little slippery, you can also get a minimal number of drops dripping on you from the cave ceiling, but nothing that can get you wet for real). If you’re going to see the cave on their longer guided tour by boat, you should level up the clothes and shoes, too 🙂
