A hike full of surprises
The greater part of Istria is located in Croatia, but it is also a partly in Slovenia and Italy. With a typical karst-mediterranean vibe of nature, architecture and culture, you cannot not go and experience the vibe.
The magic of two rivers: Mirna and Draga
An active hike near old town Buzet
Even though this beautiful trail is not in Slovenia, we decided to take a short roadtrip to the starting point, Croatia. Firstly, because we love water and waterfalls, secondly, we love hiking and among many other reasons: we’ve never been there before.
After about an hour drive from home, enjoying the road and the nature, typical for this part of Slovenia (and Croatia) we arrived to the parking lot close to a brewery. Our backpacks were filled with water, coffee and some snacks – because it is about 15km long trail, which is marked mostly as easy, but there are some steep passages, so you might need some strength in your legs, too. One part of the trail is also marked to be a bike trail, but be prepared to cross some watery riverbeds, too.
However, it is not marked very well, so you might need a little help of gps or other people hiking.
On the way through this typical istrian area, we were joking about it’s soon going to b a trail of 8 waterfalls, because you can definitely spot some miniature waterfalls too.
We visited the place on a lovely Saturday in late March and even though we thought it’s just going to be mostly the two of us, the trail was pretty crowded. It was raining days before and that was pretty sunny, which makes it the perfect time to visit. It is important to wear appropriate footwear and be cautious, because the terrain can be muddy and slippery, especially near the waterfalls.
There are seven waterfalls and each one of them is beautiful in it’s own way.
You’ll see:
Zagon (5 m)
Bačva (8 m)
Vela peć (26.5 m)
Mala peć (4 m)
Kotli (12 m)
Zelenšća (7.9 m)
Grjok (8.2 m)
Don’t forget to enjoy the views of the canyon walls, some beautiful views and do not get too bored, because a few times along the way the path is just a path with bushes on each side and nothing to see there. Water is a must to take along if you are visiting on a warm day.
Enjoy some entrances to the mines at the beginning of the trail, almost halfway through there’s one of the Napoleon’s bridges and the water color can be very beautiful, almost emerald and turquoise but also pretty unclear.
