Sapotnik Waterfall is a hidden gem near the village of Podkraj, above the Vipava Valley. It lies close to the Bela stream, which has carved a beautiful gorge over time. Sapotnik is one of its smaller streams, and here the water drops about 27 meters down a rocky cliff. In winter, the waterfall can freeze and create impressive ice formations that also attract ice climbers. The whole Podkraj area is full of springs and streams, as this is a typical karst landscape where water shapes the terrain.
The waterfall is not marked and there are no official trails leading to it, so it can be difficult to find. We parked below the village and started walking along a forest path, then continued across meadows while searching for the waterfall. Since there are no signs, we followed the terrain and our sense of direction. Luckily, locals helped us along the way, and one of them even guided us almost all the way to the waterfall, which made a big difference.
The walk itself is very enjoyable. It leads through forest, across open meadows, and alongside small streams. As you get closer, the path becomes steeper and the sound of water gets louder. In the end, the waterfall appears as a tall and narrow stream of water falling between rocks. The area feels wild, quiet, and untouched.
Sapotnik Waterfall is not a typical tourist spot, and that is exactly what makes it special. It is perfect for those who enjoy exploring and discovering hidden places. For us, the trip felt like a small adventure, and the waterfall was the highlight of the day.
