The land of karst lakes
Second biggest of the 17 lakes in the area.
Intermittent lake magic
Pristine nature and quietness
Our visit to two of the Pivka region’s enchanting karst lakes turned out to be an amazing experience. The first stop was Petelinjsko Jezero, the second-largest intermittent lake of the 17 in this area. It is known for retaining water the longest. Despite its reputation, the lake was bone dry on that crisp, sunny December morning, offering an excellent opportunity to walk across its bed—endless, frost-tipped meadows with a touch of marshland.
The quietness of the area was magical. We arrived early in the day, with part of the landscape still glistening under frost while other areas basked romantically in the sunlight. The untouched beauty of the surroundings was captivating—wide-open views framed by soft hills and shadowy forest paths. We followed these trails up above the lake, where a hidden tree swing tempted us to pause, reflect, and marvel at the scenery.
To top it off, we launched a drone, which revealed even more of the lake’s charm from above. Seeing its textured fields and natural contours from the sky was breathtaking. For us, this visit was much more than a simple hike; it was an intimate encounter with nature’s raw elegance, leaving us in awe and inspired by its quiet resilience.
Worth the visit, if you want to combine a long walk with views on the vast lake area and enjoy pristine nature.
