Lately, we’ve been heading to the Štajerska region a lot. Partly for work, but also to enjoy the amazing nature there.

Visiting this area was  a last minute call. After driving there, we spent a night at a local hostel. The next morning, after two cups of  coffee at a nearby bar, we drove about half an hour to the trailhead. Our goal was the Šum Waterfall, which can be reached by hiking through the beautiful Bistriški Vintgar gorge.

The Bistriški vintgar gorge is a typical gorge with lots of green nature and a torrent stream almost all the way up. 

Offering a 6 km hiking trail starting from Zgornja Bistrica. The trail features natural attractions like the 13-meter Šum Waterfall .

Lovely, almost jungle-ish vibe escorts you to the waterfall Šum (Whisper), a waterfall that impresses with its wild splashing of water.

It’s a 13m slipping water and really refreshing corner of the gorge. One can really relax mind and soul already while walking, let alone over the view of the waterfall.

You can then continue the hike to historical sites, including a Roman marble quarry and the remains of a late antique fort. The hike passes through a forest reserve with notable trees, such as the Marolt Fir. The journey can end in Močnik, with options to extend the hike or return via various routes. The trail is considered easy and takes about 2.5 hours.

There were so many other sights to see, but we couldn’t fit them all into one day because of our schedule. We’ll definitely go back for another few hours hike to explore everything. We really loved it!
